> > sayulita <
now a bit about this little mexican town we've chosen to plant ourselves in for a while... sayulita is a little fishing and surfing village about 30 minutes north of puerto vallarta in the state of nayarit.
while traveling with family in mexico years ago, ian and i got to stay in sayulita for one night. we were dropped off in the middle of town and just wandered around. we found some guys who were shaping surfboards and they drove us in the back of their pickup truck to a place we could have for the night. we stayed, we surfed, we fell in love with sayulita. so much so that, having spent only 24 hours in the town, we decided to get married here 5 years ago. ...and here we are again.
sayulita only has somewhere around 4,000 residents. it feels really small. we walk everywhere - la plaza, la playa, las, tiendas, la escuela. sometimes, instead of using the bridge, we've put the kids on our backs and walked through the rio that runs through town. on just our little street, we walk past wandering chickens, babies riding on motorcycles, kids driving atvs, trash and shit and tropical flowers, roving dogs, tourists, surfers, and ancient ones. there is a lot of life here and it feels like we are right in the middle of it. at least for now it is all exciting.
we are dirty and sandy and sweaty and together. it feels good.
> > our casa - tribeza magazine <
austin's tribeza magazine included our house in their architecture issue. we're one of "seven unique vacation rentals" and we're mentioned on page 105. they didn't even feature the muraled rooms - the live oak room and the galactic room, which i think make it pretty awesome.
> > escuela <
koruna started school here yesterday. we all loved the early morning walk to school. the streets were filled with kids and parents doing the same thing. we had visited school the day before and neither koruna nor marvel wanted to leave.
when ian picked runa up from escuela the first day, he took the below picture of her. a friend in her class arrived in sayulita last month and was apparently really excited for koruna to be here. you can see that she planted herself as close to koruna as possible.
while nuestra hija was at school, the rest of us headed to the beach. since the waves and the tourist season haven't picked up yet, we had the whole beach to ourselves.
just us, a couple of paddleboarders, and the jellyfish. i picked up 3 big jellyfish stings. we asked for an adventure and we are getting one.
we hope to be in our casa in the next day or two. just enjoying our time together and taking it day by day.
> > estamos aqui <
we're here. sort of. we're not where we expected to be. we arrived to find that our casa is under construction. workers, dust, building materials everywhere. unlivable for a few days. no bueno. we're in a condo by the ocean right now - not too shabby - but not our plan. it's thrown us for a loop - the first of many i suppose.
1 bad spill, 1 chipped tooth, 3 throwups, a dozen meltdowns, 2 headaches, and a deep breath later, we're alive and reasonably well. we'll settle in soon.
love to all a y'all.
