juice
i'm officially in my 3rd trimester this week and am needing a lot of liquid on these hot summer days. i love to juice, but i do not love cleaning our ancient juicer and i do not love the deafening noise that it makes as it pumps out the delectable juice. neither does koruna. for those reasons, i've been juicing less these last few months, but i realized i've been missing it. we still have tons of swiss chard in the garden so i got out there and gathered some along with some basil. i added beets and beet greens, a pear, and enough ginger to almost hurt. it was muy bueno. runa liked it, too.
on the topic of juice, i've got to mention our favorite local juice joint, the daily juice. deLIcious stuff after a run at town lake or a dip in the springs. my favorites are the 'thai curious' and the 'cosmic trigger'.
still, ya just can't beat homegrown.
fragile
"Your joy is your sorrow unmasked." the above passage by kahlil gibran keeps running through my mind. i'm emotionally fragile these days, sometimes surprising myself with tears - happy and sad tears, but it often takes me a while to really figure out which. as my outward appearance changes, my inner landscape shifts to the point that, at moments, i am almost unrecognizable to myself. children change you from the moment they are conceived. koruna has altered me heart and soul and i can barely believe i get to do this all again with another human being. this may be the last time i carry a child inside of me. i'm trying to savor all of it - the ups and downs - knowing that this is the only time in all my son's life that i get him to myself.
i decided to go back and read gibran's passage on children and thought i'd share it:
Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
i'm feeling fragile today.
life IS fragile. health is fragile. today i'm just glad to be here. breathing. crying. loving.
homegrown tomatoes
we harvested our first tomatoes of the season this week - one big one and lots of little cherry tomatoes. last year our tomatoes were ehhhhh, but this year they're scrumptious. koruna's a fan. she likes 'em straight from the vine - no masking their flavor with other ingredients.
while out in the garden this morning, i found myself meandering over by the compost. it's always so lush through no efforts of our own.
it's nice to be reminded that our "trash" can grow flowers.
uh oh. my daily fashion.
there are some really put-together looking mamas out there. i see them every day and stare in wonder at how in the world they do it. i'm not one of those mamas. the pictures i post on this blog are usually carefully chosen. i try to get ian to take pictures of me when i feel like i look halfway decent. but i find that my desire to be AT ALL stylish is eroding as my belly gets bigger and the weather gets hotter. i find myself simply wanting to WEAR LESS. since i work from my studio at home, i can get away with it. at 6 months pregnant, i try to start each day with a walk around the neighborhood. that means that i can usually be seen in a tank top and shorts (that over the last few months are beginning to more closely resemble panties, i'm afraid) with my hair piled on top of my head. as for morning walk accessories, i carry 7 pound weights. my teenage self would cringe at the sight.
this morning as i was sweating and huffing and puffing up a hill, i realized that the 2 weights in my hands added up to the amount of weight i will most likely still gain in this pregnancy. just the thought of that stopped me in my tracks and i had to sit on the curb for a minute to process it. ooooh, it's gonna be a long, hot, unfashionable summer, y'all....
