we went to west texas for the 4th of july. knowing it would be about a 7 hour road trip each way, I made an "Ain't that America" cd to listen to in the car. It was a spectrum of patriotic songs - old and new and folk and bugles and parade songs. it was a long cd.
there were 2 crowd pleasers in the whole bunch. i could've just filled the cd with these two songs:
1. "yankee doodle" (pete seeger's version)
marvel kept requesting it over and over while he and koruna pretended to play the banjo. he calls it "Uncle Dirty" which substantially changes the meaning of the song.
2. "party in the usa" (miley cyrus) yep, miley cyrus, y'all. a well placed pop song can do wonders for the energy in a car.
(can you believe i am admitting that miley stuff? it is in hopes that some of you might remember this and save your own sanity by movin' your hips like yeah in the car next 4th of july....)
we had a great 4th. family, rainbows, uncle dirty, miley, and all.

my birthday was awesome. i woke up and got my face painted, went paddle boarding on ladybird lake, had lunch with ian at black sheep lodge, got a foot massage, met the fam at whole foods and walked to waterloo records where we saw/listened/danced to shinyribs. capped off the day with amigos at swift's attic and the elephant room. it was a lovely austin day.
