we whooped it up again with shana the other day and took the 5th portrait in our american gothic, south austin style series. (our first with marvel.)
this series (which can be seen on my portraits page) was inspired by a random photo that ian and i took of ourselves years ago in anticipation of our travels to india in 2006. (see the last photo at the bottom of the portraits page.) we started the series with shana when i was pregnant with koruna in 2009.
i am always amazed at what shana can capture. a 2-and-a-half-year-old and a 4-month-old ain’t exactly easy to corral. i dig the photo below. rooster is sneezing and mars is just DONE.
i hope we hope we get to keep adding to this series until all four of us are old and gray.
i love my family.

Oh the joy of this colorful, multi-textured, many layered clan you have become. When you and Ian sat for that first hysterical photo who could have dreamed that in such a short time, your life could have looked like this. What an example of being given “more than you could think or ask.” You are all beautiful in every measurable way and I am so happy to be part of the large group who stands behind the curtain as it were. Many of us are blessed to say we made some contribution to who you are today and we still stand in support of who you are becoming. Whoa and Hallelujah!
Love,
Honey
fantastic.
hard to imagine that when the babes are grown you will love these pictures a million times more than you do now. but i suspect you will.
documentation of a life well lived.
good stuff.
GLORY TO THE HIGHEST!
AMEN
Every time I look at these – and that would be more times than I’m willing to admit – I see something wonderful that I had not noticed before. For example, I just noticed that the backdrop has been different in each of these portraits. I was also loving the “tat” timeline – the first was “pre-tat” for JL and “tat in process” for Ian, then there was “finished tat” for Ian and “tat in process” for JL, and, finally, “finished tats” for both.
I was also thinking about the village behind the backdrop which brought back sweet memories of Robin and Duffy, Bill and Karen, and Barry and Terry and how much they loved being part of your village.
oh, i do love the becoming…
we just might have to keep getting tattoos. hhhmmmmm….
I can’t get my eyes off all four of ya’ll’s hands, there are stories in your hands alone, you all wrap around each other in the tenderest way, but the both-hands grip Koruna has on her daddy in the 3rd frame of the triptych gets me to the core. One thing, these kids are not going to need WahWah’s emotional range tutorials, they’ve got the stuff. xoxoxoxo
and i do love the way koruna’s hand wraps around Marvel’s wrist……
And what about her hand on his head mid-sneeze even?? So soft and protective seeming. And Koruna’s skirt. From India via Auntie Ivy I think. Did she have this portrait in mind when she made the purchase, because it could not be more perfect for American Gothic, South Austin Style. Oh how much love goes here.
Honey
i do like knowing where all of our clothes came from. ian is wearing a shirt of sandy besser’s. my shirt i bought before ian’s new york show. run’s skirt IS from ivy’s india trip. marvel’s pants are from santa fe and his shirt is from jan. my head scarf is one of mimi’s sashes. runa’s snake necklace is from nao. we bought the kercheif in ian’s pocket while on our honeymoon in mexico. we’re standing in front of one of ian’s turkish souvenirs. not much from south austin in the south austin style….
Oh Child, all that eclecticism is what MAKES it south Austin style! I love knowing all those details as well. I am glad it is written down here ahead of the day we cannot remember. Because you know how now I go back and look at pictures and ask, “now which girl is this?” Maybe it is just me…..
Love,
Honey
flo schooled me on the backdrops of your American Gothic Series, South Austin Style and she told me ( even supplied a link) that your back drop is a suzanni ( i may have not spelled right _for those of you who know about the RISK board in our living room you’ll understand)…our friend Blair observed the same- oh, she said…look at the suzannis….so, like honey i am in awe of how the parts make the whole and how knowing the parts makes me wholly enthralled and forever amazed.
